OLS Location
The Old Latin School (OLS) is at the physical and spiritual center of the community, directly adjacent to the St. Mary’s City Church, or Stadtkirche, where Luther preached more than 2,000 sermons and which is known as the “Mother Church of the Reformation.” The OLS is also within easy walking distance of the former university buildings where Luther taught, his home, the Castle Church, or Schlosskirche, where Luther nailed his 95 Theses and is buried, and other Reformation landmarks. Situated just off the town market place, visitors are able to walk to historic sites as well as to stores, banks and restaurants.
Getting to Wittenberg from Berlin or Leipzig
Lutherstadt Wittenberg is approximately 130 km (80 miles) from Berlin and 70 km (43 miles) from Leipzig.
By Car
The A9/E51 autobahn passes west of Wittenberg. Exits at Klein Marzehns when driving from Berlin or Coswig (Anhalt) when coming from Leipzig. The town lies at the crossing of German Federal highways B2 and B187.
By Train/Rail
High-speed ICE (Inter-City Express) trains on the Leipzig-Berlin line stop in Wittenberg from both directions. The ride takes about 40 minutes from the Leipzig Hauptbahnhof or 45 minutes from the Berlin Hauptbahnhof. As a slower but cheaper option, you can also use RE (Regional Express) or RB (Regional Bahn) trains, which run about every two hours. With these trains, the ride takes just over an hour from either Berlin or Leipzig. For train schedules, use the English-language journey planner (use “Lutherstadt Wittenberg” as your arrival or departure station).
From Wittenberg Train Station to the OLS
You can walk to the OLS from the Lutherstadt Wittenberg Hauptbahnhof in about 20 minutes. Simply follow the signs to the “Altstadt” and look for the twin spires of the Stadtkirche. The OLS is right next door. (Taxis also are available at the train station and will cost about 10 €.)
